To Einat Wilf, many thanks for the excellent telling of who Theodor Herzyl was. To the anti-Zionists (or whatever label describes your Jew hatred), this is the real story, the true meaning of being a Zionist. Far from being the slime you claim, Zionists only wish for a home, Israel, and to be left alone. To the "good Jews", who separate themselves from Israel, the only true home of Jews, and who disassociate themselves from fellow Jews that call themselves Zionists, shame on you for bringing shame on Israel and your fellow Jews. You are a disgrace.
This is a wonderful story about Herzyl, the original and true Zionist. I remember his story from many years ago in Hebrew School, but it's great brought up to date with so many details about an amazing man.
What a great curriculum and stellar essay. My family has lived in Israel since as early as the late 1700’s as part of the Perushim movement. My grandfather was deported by the Ottoman authorities in Palestine around the start of WWI, probably to avoid the draft. While my Jewish friends with immigrant grandparents were inculcated with Zionist thought, we just sent money to a family we didn’t know and planted trees during my grandfather’s life. After 40 years, auspicious I know, we found our family right where he left them in 1948, his only return trip. To them, we were the ones who were lost.
That is when I read Herzl’s biography and Altneuland and understood in my kishkes what is what. I was 42 years old then. I would love to have been a fly on the wall in your class to see how the students responded!
My question has become how to how to cure sinat chinam amongst ourselves. That to me is the most intractable “Jewish problem”. Herzl, as far as I know, never studied rabbinic texts before he declared “peoplehood.” May we be blessed with a creative inventor/thinker/problem solver to tackle that, so we may become truly unstoppable within our borders to create the world we dream of, peace.

Tremendous essay.
I will never get enough of either Einat Wilf or Theodor Herzl. Thank you for this!
Everything Einat writes and says resonates deeply.

Brilliant essay this should be taught in history classes, unfortunately today’s teachers are mostly on the left and antisemitic.
Thank you for your brilliant short history of this great Zionist.
I second your comment.
Why do you call Herzl Herzyl?
Is there a iod between zayin and lamed in ivrit?
